Kids at Work

Kidz Tips
  • All drop in schedule
  • Purchase a single drop in or class pack

In these classes, designed for the youngest music-makers and the people who love them, parents will be introduced to fun and interesting musical activities and a wonderful community of new moms and caregivers.  Jam Sessions Babies is taught by Kids at Work Founder Julie Averill, who is a mom herself and has over 10 years of experience working with infants and families, along with a separate professional guitarist. Parents will be encouraged to participate in a low-stress, relaxed atmosphere based on improvisation where mistakes and questions are welcome!  Jam Sessions classes are never amplified and are tailored to the individual children's temperaments.

*PLEASE NOTE* - All KAW classes are drop-ins. This means that with the purchase of this package, which can be used for 18 classes ($33 per class) over the course of our 20 week semester, your child may attend any KAW class during the course of the semester with a reservation. Please call or email to make a reservation or if you have any further questions.  Once you register we will contact you to introduce you to our online reservation system.

Jam Sessions Babies Music (semester or single drop-in)

I’ve been taking my son to Baby Jam Sessions for several months now (he was ages 6-9 months) and I have been very pleased with the classes. The classes are well structured for little babies. Nice, pleasant songs and plenty of baby appropriate musical instruments and activities (balls, bubbles, parachute, etc.) for the babies to play with. The class is led by Julie and Ian and they are not only gifted musically, but are VERY good with babies. It’s a very calming atmosphere. The class is structured in such a way that it’s up to the parent/baby to decide how much they want to get involved. Some babies just sit or lay on the floor and take it all in. Some clap and “sing” along and some (like my baby) explore the room, interacts with the other babies/parents and loves playing with the instruments. The variety of songs that are sung are diverse and fun. I was worried it would be typical Itsy-Bitsy Spider and other common songs, but we sing children’s songs that I haven’t heard before. Which I really like because then I can take those songs (and accompanying games/motions) and use them at home.

Jam Sessions Babies Music (semester or single drop-in)

Jam Sessions is an amazing music class for babies. As a veteran mommy whose tried lots of different baby classes, I've been so impressed by how well Julie understands babies and what motivates them to listen and participate. My daughter is enraptured by Julie's beautiful voice and Ian's soulful accompaniment every class, and really enjoys the simple rhymes and movements that go perfectly with the music. I love the emphasis on beautiful music over entertainment - very hard to come in Manhattan by despite the plethora of baby music programs.

Kids at Work (Provider)

I saw a free soccer class advertised on Kidz Central Station. I didn't have to work that day (it was a holiday) so I immediately signed my almost 2 year old son up. This is where we discovered that we loved soccer. The class was so much fun, the instructors were excellent and the staff was very friendly. I am looking forward to looking into other classes at Kids at Work!

Creation Station Dance! Tots and Tutus

Lovely class for little ones wanting to experiment with ballet. Class seemed a little instructive and long for my 20 month old. Large area and fun props. The teacher was patient and good with the kids

Kids at Work was created in Manhattan in 2007 by early childhood educator Julie Averill. Started as one Saturday art class operating out of the Village Preschool Center on W10th Street, Kids at Work, now located at 242 W27th Street, has grown into one of Chelsea's best kept secrets - a community of children, parents and caregivers making real discoveries together.
Kids at Work classes are focused on educational best practices, including ideas taken from the Bank Street and Montessori systems, such as process-oriented and confidence-building, choice driven activities. Perhaps most interesting is Kids at Work's flexible drop-in policy, making it truly unlike any other  program. Try out a Kids at Work class and see the difference!
